Strength You Can Count On For
Cost Effective Concrete Masonry Designs
The New York State Concrete Masonry
Association has developed a test program which assures
availability of high strength concrete masonry units across New
York State. Participating NYSCMA block producers manufacture
their stock block to higher strength standards. The New York
State Concrete Masonry Association manages the program by
qualifying initial tests and randomly testing manufacturers
block afterward.
All block from participating NYSCMA manufacturers will comply
with a 28 day net area compressive strength of 2800 compared to
1900 which is required by ASTM C 90 "Standard Specification For
Load Bearing Concrete Masonry Units." For engineers this equals
a "Compressive Strength Of Masonry" of f m 2000 when the unit
strength method is used and approximately f m 2500 if the prism
test method is employed.

Program
Compliance
Program testing for participating NYSCMA member
producers consists of a rigorous schedule of testing
standard production, in stock, concrete masonry
units in accordance with the following standards:
a.) ASTM C140 - Standard Test Methods for Sampling
and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related
Units.
b.) ASTM C426 - Standard Test Method for Linear
Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Masonry Units.
c.) ASTM C1314 -Standard Test Method for Compressive
Strength of Masonry Prisms.
"F'm2000-NYSCMA Assurance of Quality Program" program
compliance requires regular testing of all program
members' concrete masonry units in accordance with
the standards listed above every two years.
In addition, each participating producer's concrete
masonry units are subject to random ASTM C 140
testing on a quarterly basis. Testing is performed
at the National Concrete Masonry Association lab to
verify compliance.
